Dungeon Settlers Population & Recruitment Guide

Last checked: September 1, 2026Pre-release guide — recheck after launch

Recruit to fill a missing role, not simply because you can afford the gold. Every settler adds food and housing pressure, while only four join a dungeon party. Extra settlers are valuable when they improve research, farming, mining, crafting or provide replacement depth after permanent death.

Why extra settlers still matter

The expedition party is limited, but the settlement needs workers. Footage shows recruits with different stats and job usefulness, and characters can contribute to crafting/mining-style settlement work.

Permanent death also means a bench matters: losing one specialist should not force a full campaign restart.

Recruit checklist

What combat role does this candidate fill?

Which main/sub skill trees are available?

Do race/background/personality traits help or hurt your economy?

Can the settlement feed and house them now?

What productive job can they do while not in the active four?

Would they duplicate a role you already cover better?

Population timing

If food is unstable, recruiting is usually a mistake.

If housing is unfinished, fix shelter first.

If the active party is already strong but production is slow, recruit for the settlement job rather than another damage dealer.
